About Examining Ubuntu
The African concept of Ubuntu is encapsulated in the Zulu proverb "Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu": A person is a person through other people. In this spirit, Examining Ubuntu will provide a range of opportunities for participants to explore the concept of Ubuntu, as manifested through forgiveness, reconciliation, community building and social-outreach in societies characterized by socio-political conflict and systemic violations of human rights.
The Examining Ubuntu conference aims to raise awareness of South Africa’s inspiring approach to reconciliation through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and to promote dialogue about its applicability in other contexts. Although there will be a particular focus on the South African experience, significant attention will be devoted to parallels and applications of this experience to other contexts, including U.S. civil rights struggles and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
All events associated with Examining Ubuntu are free and open to the public.
